Abstract

RailML is a data exchange format developed by a European consortium of railway companies, academic institutions and consulting firms due to the shortcomings and inefficient way of connecting different railway IT applications. Its main objective is to enable heterogeneous railway applications to communicate with each other. Due to the complexity of railway data and the many syntactic differences among the railways, software using the RailML format have to be certified. The certification ensures the quality of the railML interfaces, which further ensures the quality of the railML interface. The RailML protocol was formed to improve the exchange of data between railway information technologies. Since 2002. RailML is evolving and improving. It is used to create and implement systematic XML-oriented data exchange solutions between railway applications. The RailML language, for example, provides universally applicable data exchange formats between infrastructure owners and various operators, but also enables further progress in the implementation of the necessary IT solutions on the railway.
