Abstract

Transport has a very important role in social and economic functioning, while an efficient transport system is a need and a priority of today. However, although it has many benefits, most transport activities, including rail transport, have some negative effects. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present the main impacts of railway transport on the environment in order to see the disadvantages and advantages that the railway has in terms of environmental protection and preservation. Therefore, this paper discusses some of the critical aspects of railways for the environment and presents a number of measures and solutions that can be applied to protect the environment and mitigate the negative effects of railways, especially from the aspect of further development of railway infrastructure and projected further growth of railway traffic next period.
