On September 13, 1950, the Government of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia passed a decree establishing the Higher Traffic School as "the highest academic, educational and scientific institution for

  1. hiring higher education experts for the exploitation of vehicles in certain branches of traffic,
  2. scientific research work and participation in scientific problem solving in the field of traffic "..

The Higher Traffic School started working in the fall of 1950 in its new building in Banovo brdo in Belgrade (now the Faculty of Forestry), when students enrolled in the first, second and third year of studies at the same time. In the second and third year, they enrolled in the first or second year at related technical faculties (Mechanical, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering).

In the first school year, about 140 students enrolled in the first year of studies, and a total of over 450.  By the decree of the Government of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia the jurisdiction over the Higher Traffic School was transferred from the Federal Administration to the People's Republic of Serbia. On August 5, 1952, The Council for Education, Science and Culture of the People’s Republic of Serbia,  abolished the Higher Traffic School as an independent institution and merged it with the then Higher Technical School in Belgrade under the name "Independent Traffic Department".

On that occasion, the building of the Higher Traffic School in Banovo brdo was ceded to the Faculty of Forestry, and the Independent Traffic Department was given very modest premises in the Great Technical School.

The admissions of new students for the school year 1952/53 were temporarily suspended, and classes at the Independent Traffic Department were conducted only for students who were already enrolled in the Higher Traffic School in 1952.

Two years from then, more precisely on May 28, 1954, the Council of the Great Technical School concluded that there was a need for the education of traffic engineers and that the Independent Traffic Department should be enabled to continue its work. Immediately after this, the Executive Council of the People's Republic of Serbia passed a decree, which allowed the admissions of new students in the Independent Traffic Department starting from the school year 1954/55, and their enrolment in the fifth semester. Independence in academic education, therefore, referred only to the professional part of the studies. The general preparatory part of the studies (I and II year) students had to complete at other technical faculties. With the new reorganization of higher education in Belgrade in 1954, the Great Technical School and the Great Medical School were dissolved, and the faculties that were located within these schools became part of the University of Belgrade. By the Decree no. 361 of July 28, 1954, the Executive Council of the People's Republic of Serbia decided that the Independent Traffic Department should continue its work within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

During the next five years, there were no significant changes, and the admission of new students at the Independent Traffic Department at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was still done only in the fifth semester, that is, only for the professional part of the study.

The growing interest of the economy for traffic engineers contributed to the decision of the Council of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering on April 6, 1959 to propose the establishment of the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering to the Council of the University of Belgrade. At its session, on June 29, 1959, the University Council decided to postpone the establishment of the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering to 1960/61 school year, but to enrol students in the first year of the Independent Traffic Department at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in the school year 1959/60. Finally, by the Law on Universities, on June 8, 1960, the Independent Traffic Department at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering grew into the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering of the University of Belgrade.

Since the school year of 1960/61, students have been enrolling in the first year of studies at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering. From 1960 to 1978, the Faculty worked in very difficult conditions in the part of the building of the Faculty of Mining in Takovska Street no. 34 (several classrooms with offices for dean and vice-dean, financial and student department). At that time, the Faculty also used the premises in a small and narrow building on Topčiderski venac no. 8, where, in addition to classrooms and offices, it had a library and a laboratory for graphic reproduction. As the Faculty developed, the need for larger academic workspaces grew, so a several premises were rented in Belgrade (amphitheatre in Sarajevska Street, classrooms of the Higher Railway School, workers' universities "Đuro Salaj", "Braća Stamenković" and "Veselin Masleša").

Even in such difficult conditions, the Faculty enrolled the maximum possible number of full-time and part-time students, did not neglect the First Degree of studies (Road, River, Sea and Air Divisions), and organized Postgraduate studies. The first generation of postgraduates was enrolled in the school year of 1970/71 and until now, classes have been organized for twenty-six generations of postgraduates.

At the beginning of a school year of 1978/79, the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering moved into its new building in Vojvode Stepe St. No 305. It has about 13,800 m2 of usable space (32 classrooms, 5 amphitheatres, 7 laboratory rooms, a library, 86 course-based classrooms, 18 offices, a meeting room, etc.). .

Today, the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering has a modern library, computer centre, institute, laboratories, deals with publishing, etc.
